Quick SEO Tips For People Who Don’t Have Time For SEO
Since I started working at a killer Las Vegas SEO company, I’ve noticed that lots of people are taking a DIY approach to SEO, and they don’t want to spend as much time on it as I do, what with being a full-time blogger and all.
The truth is that SEO isn’t all-important for all businesses.
In fact, some businesses really don’t need to spend much time on SEO at all.
Is SEO Important For Your Business?
Let’s clear up a few things right from the start.
SEO is search engine optimization, and the term SEO refers only to practices that are intended to increase your odds of showing up higher in search engine results. The focus is usually on Google, because Google is the most widely used search engine.
SEO does not mean sending more traffic to your website, or marketing online, or managing social media.
Lots of business owners think they’re talking about SEO, but what they really need is a digital marketing plan, and that’s something different.
Another common error that entrepreneurs make when considering their marketing and content strategy is asking this question:
Will my business benefit from SEO?
By itself, that’s not a valuable question.
Here’s what you should be asking:
Will my business benefit enough from an SEO strategy to make it worth my time, money, and effort?
Look, part of my job is to provide SEO services to clients, and in order to do that, I have to sell people on the benefits of SEO. Yes, a good SEO strategy can benefit any business…but that doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot of time on it.
For some businesses, the terms they need to rank for are so competitive that getting traffic from Google will take an exorbitant amount of time and effort. Even then, the competition in Google results is stiff, so you’re not guaranteed to see any new traffic.
With that same time and effort, a marketing campaign with Facebook ads is far more likely to generate a significant amount of income.
If it were you making the decision, which would you rather do?
Fun fact: it IS you making the decision!
For businesses with tight budgets, little time, an immediate need for sales, or hyper-competitive search environments, SEO is probably going to be a lower priority than other types of marketing.
However, if you have a $0 marketing budget and time is not an issue, SEO is probably the best way to start driving traffic.
If the only issue is the amount of time you’d spend optimizing your site, you might consider using a third party SEO company to help boost your rankings while you focus on other things.
It’s your call. Nobody knows your business like you do.
Don’t Completely Ignore SEO
There’s a caveat to all of that:
Just because SEO isn’t a high priority, that doesn’t mean you should ignore it completely. More than a project, SEO is simply a set of good habits that gradually help you get more exposure through organic (free) search traffic.

When it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of time or money on an aggressive SEO strategy, you can still take simple steps to improve your search rankings without drastically increasing the amount of time you spend working on your website.

When it comes to optimizing for search, most of that work falls into one of two categories:
Keywords, or backlinks.
Yes, there’s more to SEO than just keywords and backlinks – site speed, structure, site functionality, and lots of other details contribute to rankings – but keywords and backlinks are the two main areas that take up most of that optimization time.
These quick tips help you start improving in those areas without doing in-depth research, building a robust backlink strategy, or hiring a digital marketing company to do it for you.
Common Sense Keywords
Without using tools like SEMrush or ahrefs, you can still put keywords in your online content.
The simplest way to start adding intelligent keywords to your website is to ask yourself this common sense question:
If I was going to Google something to try to find this content, what would I type into Google?
Take it a step further by opening an Incognito window and actually Googling that keyword, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and look at related searches. That gives you similar keywords that you can include in your content.
It’s not nearly as robust as the keyword research we do at the digital marketing company, but it will get you started.
Internal and External Links
You already know that blogging is good for SEO.
This tip is especially good for well-optimized blog posts.
Every time you write a new blog post, get in the habit of including at least one internal link (a link to another relevant page to your website) and one external link (a link to someone else’s website.)
Those links are good for SEO and good for keeping people engaged with your content.
Just make sure that you set external links to open in a new window.
Write About Other People
On your blog, don’t only talk about yourself.
When you write about other people – not necessarily direct competitors, but people who market to a very similar audience – you expand your reach and encourage them to write about you in turn.
Just because you post about someone, that doesn’t mean they’re going to post about you…
But sometimes, you’ll get a good backlink out of it, and every time, you’ll get good content that’s valuable to your readers.
Install the Yoast Plugin
If you use WordPress, install the Yoast SEO plugin. It’s super easy to use, and it makes simple SEO habits a cinch.
Yoast also allows you to easily edit your meta data.
Don’t worry about the technical term; it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Your meta title and your meta description are the little snippets that show up in search engines and on social media when your posts are shared.
Always fill out that meta description with a short blurb about your post, and make sure it’s clear what the post is about.
With these very basic habits, you’ll be worlds ahead of most people who DIY their websites, and you’ll have a solid foundation built later when SEO becomes more important for your success.
